Syracuse Parks and Recreation, the Thornden Park Association, and the University Neighborhood Preservation Association, are proud to host our first Youth Aquathon for kids ages 5-15. Short Course – Ages 8 -11 will swim 42-meters (side-to-side across the pool and back) before running approximately ½ mile in the Park.
Long Course – Ages 12-15 will swim 100 meters (full length down and back) before a ¾ mile run.
Jr Aquathon – Ages 5-7 will swim 22 Meters (once across in the shallow end) and run ¼ mile in the Park.
Event details and schedule:
10:00am – . Registration and check-in will begin at the Pool Building. Parking will be available in the Thornden Park Pool Lot, and on neighboring streets.
Since this is an untimed event, starting positions and times will be based on a first come, first served basis within each category. Have your online or paper registration and waiver completed before checking-in. Bring your swim suit, towel, running clothes and shoes, and any other materials that you may need (ear buds, goggles, water bottle, etc).
After completing check-in, and changing into swim gear, participants will be directed through the Pool building and onto the pool deck. Participants will place running gear in the designated transition area (sneakers, socks, shirt)
The Aquathon will be held entirely within Thornden Park. The swim portion will utilize the outdoor pool, before transitioning to the run course which will be on a closed portion of the Park road (or across the Park lawn for Jr Aquathon).
11:00am – Long Course (Age 12-15) heats: Participants, in groups of up to 8, will be directed to one end of the pool. Upon completion of the swimming leg, participants will exit the pool, head to the transition area, put on running gear, and proceed to the long run course. A new group will begin the swimming leg every 8-10 minutes.
11:30am – Short Course (Age 8- 11) heats: Participants, in groups of up to 15 at a time, will be directed to the side of the pool. You will swim across and back one time. Upon completion of the swimming leg, participants will exit the pool, head to the transition area, put on running gear, and proceed to the short run course. A new group will begin the swimming leg every 8-10 minutes.
12:15pm – Jr Course (ages 5-7): Participants, in groups of up to 8, will be directed to the side of the pool at the shallow end. You will swim across one time, using a kickboard (or volunteers) for assistance if necessary. Participants will exit the pool, put on running gear, and run across the field toward the finish line (1/4 mile)
Run Course… Runners will leave the transition area and head toward the Park road. Volunteers and signage will direct runners along the appropriate course in the park. All runners will cross the same finish line, near the pool house!
