HARRY LEWIS WAY
A proclamation naming Meadowbrook Drive between Broad & Westcott Streets in honor of university neighborhood and community advocate Harry Lewis will be presented on Sunday, May 19th at 10:30am at Barry Park. Harry Lewis Way will be named prior to the 6th Annual Barry Park Fun Run which kicks off at the corner and Broad Street & Meadowbrook Drive. Neighbors and community members are invited to celebrate Harry’s long standing dedication to the neighborhood and city.
For years, Harry, on behalf of SEUNA (Southeastern University Neighborhood Association), placed barricades to block off Meadowbrook Drive to be enjoyed by walkers, bicyclists and runners every Sunday morning from May-September.
“Harry was out there week after week setting the barrier and hanging the SEUNA flag,” shared Mike Stanton, SEUNA president. Harry has been a SEUNA member since its inception in 1973. In 2014, the stretch of Meadowbook Drive along Barry Park was changed to make a permanent pathway on one side, increasing access and safety for park users.
Councilor-at-large Michael Greene, along with UNPA’s Executive Director Rebecca Shaffer Mannion, arranged for the proclamation and celebration of Harry’s decades of volunteer service. They visited with Harry and his good pup Cooper to tell him the news. Today we wish Harry a very happy 92nd birthday!
